Usually what I noticed is that when I do wish to read a
review about a show as it helps me clear my thoughts on the show. And
potentially agree or disagree with points made pro or against the said show. But
I relatively do not find people dissecting Turkish drama.
Now I consider myself somewhat a Turkish drama veteran. As I
have watched quiet a few of them dubbed or non-dubbed it doesn’t matter. But I think I have seen enough to judge when
one really gets me hooked and when one doesn’t.
Hence Today I will be talking about Ask Aglatir. Now don’t ask
me what the term means as I am only two episodes in and I have no idea.
This show starts off like every other staple Turkish show
starts off with the introduction of Ada/Mereyem(the name given to her by her douchebag
uncle Ismail) poor penniless orphaned heroine who is taken in by her Aunt and
uncle. Her mother died, with what I can only assume is some terminal illness,
after the her dad bailed on her. Now this my dears is nothing new. Plot wise,
acting wise and generally aesthetic wise either. Ada grows up to be beautiful,
hardworking, very submissive to her uncle who sort of uses her like one would
use a cash cow. For all its worth.
He decides to marry her off to some old guy called Mustafa,
who is willing to pay 50 thousand liras just to have her. So at this point we
should know Ada has a magical vagina, because there is two guys on the
promotional pictures of this show. And now we have this psychopath attached as
well. So then enters our Hero Yusuf (
this dude will always be Alp to me from Avlu gosh the amount of times I just
kept thinking while watching his scenes, thinking he has this intense slightly psychotic
look about him like if you don’t agree with him on something he will smash your
head in with a hammer- I don’t know maybe its just me) He is our run of the
mill good guy, he is poor but sweet and kind(with a chip on his shoulder, his
hair cut also reminds me of Miran Aslanbey/But then he is more of a Clay Jenson
than a Miran Aslanbey).
So when Ada loses her wallet, and it somehow ends up in
Yusuf’s house, he finds a letter from her dead mother inside it, he travels all
the way to her little village in no where from Istanbul. Their meeting is what
gets me. I think that sometimes you can tell the same story 30 times, but if
you have good chemistry and acting. You can sell it as a new story. Yusuf and
Ada have chemistry. Its not the kind you would find yourself shipping after
like Reyann and Miran. But it’s a kind of sweet chemistry that makes you feel
warm inside. She sets his saviour mode on. And he sets her courage mode on. There
is a ton of other characters. Like the random other dude in the poster yawn. He
dragged no attention whatso ever from me. Or the other people. They all are
just boring to me. Maybe its way to early to judge. But I am enjoying Yusuf/Ada
scenes.
Its hard not to root for the underdogs. This show overall
gives me very Que sera sera vibes. But at the same time I hope it avoids that
grown upness of that show.
And just is a simple love story.
